Chay and Yves' journey began in the midst of the global lockdowns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Yves was just starting his Ph.D. in Taiwan, away from home and loved ones, while Chay found herself navigating her preschool teaching career in the Philippines despite the restrictions. Both were feeling the weight of isolation and frustration, but they soon found comfort in each other's virtual presence.
Their connection began with a shared love for the book Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, discovered through a comment thread in one of the many Facebook groups that emerged during the pandemic. What started as casual messages evolved into long conversations, voice and video calls, online movie nights, anime binges, and even online serenades. Despite, and perhaps because of, their differences, they quickly realized how much they enjoyed each other’s company, and before long, their bond deepened into a romantic one. Less than four months after their first exchange, they became "Facebook official."
Unfortunately, even though they had become official, the pandemic lockdowns prevented them from meeting in person for over a year. But they made it work, traveling back and forth between Taiwan, the Philippines, and other countries in between, as Yves continued his studies and career overseas, and Chay developed her career back home. The question, “How does your relationship work?” often comes up, but technology, the support of family and friends, and their deep commitment to one another have helped them work through the challenges of a long-distance relationship.
A year ago, with the support of their families, Yves and Chay decided to make a lifelong commitment to each other through the sacred bond of marriage. Now, they are excited to share this special day with you, surrounded by love and the joy of togetherness.
